Over the past 150 years, EY has evolved through a number of mergers of predecessor companies, the earliest of which was founded in 1849 as Harding & Pullein in England. Frederick Whinney, an accountant, joined this company the same year and ten years later was made a partner. In 1894, the company was renamed Whinney, Smith & Whinney after his son joined it.
EY, which employs 312,250 people across 700 locations in more than 150 nations worldwide, operates as a network of member businesses that are organised as independent legal entities in a partnership. Two accounting companies, Ernst & Whinney and Arthur Young & Co., merged to form the current partnership of the company in 1989. Ernst & Young was the company’s name up until a rebranding exercise in 2013 that resulted in the official adoption of the initials EY, though they had been used unofficially earlier.
